Read Wuthering Heights, through to the conclusion.
Bring to class a one page discussion, following the instructions for these in
Writing Assignments and Grades, in answer to one of the three following questions:
- The novel’s conclusion doesn’t seem, to many readers, to be a conventional happy ending. In your view, what aspect or aspects of it work to complicate any sense that everything worked out for the best?
- In most (but not all) film adaptations of the novel, Heathcliff is cast as white. If it changes your understanding of the novel to think of Heathcliff as a person of color, how does it?
- Victorian readers loved Jane Eyre but disliked Wuthering Heights. In what ways does the former seem Victorian in its values and the other seem anti-Victorian?
