Read Robert Browning's My Last Duchess
and Porphyria's Lover
.
Bring to class a one page discussion, following the instructions for these in Writing Assignments and Grades,
in answer to one of the three following questions:
- How do the ways the two Brownings use first person narrators in their poems differ, and what’s the effect of this difference?
- In what ways are the feminism of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Florence Nightingale, as expressed in the assigned readings, similar to and different from today’s most common feminism?
- Murder by a lover or husband remains one of the most common causes of violent death for women. What do Browning’s two poems suggest about the underlying causes of this violence and how do they suggest this causation?
