Victorian Literature

Learning Outcomes and Assessment for This Course.

Student Learning Outcomes: The purpose of this class is to familiarize students with British Victorian literature. By the end of the class students should be able to write an essay that interprets Victorian text in a way that demonstrates their understanding of its relation to literary conventions and history.

This course is linked to WSU's Seven Learning Goals of the Baccalaureate. It fulfills the learning goals of Diversity, Communication and Information Literacy:

Diversity:

At the end of this course, students should be able to: Understand key differences between the histories, practices, and belief systems of different groups classified under the general description of English Victorians. Critically assess the cultural and social underpinnings of knowledge claims about individuals and groups who fall under this general description, and their relations to one another. Effectively question stereotypes.

Course topics that address these learning outcomes are: Assigned readings and class discussions.

This outcome will be evaluated primarily by: Writing assignments and participation in class.

Communication:

At the end of this course, students should be able to: Interpret creative writings and essays in the context of concepts of group identities and of specific historical and cultural experiences that form them.

Course topics that address these learning outcomes are: In class discussions of writing about literature. "A Short Guide to Writing about Literature."

This outcome will be evaluated primarily by: Assigned essays and participation in class discussions.

Information Literacy:

At the end of this course, students should be able to: Determine the extent and type of information needed. Assess credibility and applicability of information sources. Use sources ethically and effectively.
