Humanities in the Modern World:
Racializations and Resistance

Learning Outcomes and Assessment for This Course.

Student Learning Outcomes: This class will introduce students to viewing techniques and critical language that will allow them to analyze the ways that minoritized filmmakers represent their own group’s racialization. Students will learn to write persuasive arguments for specific interpretations of films and the ways films convey information and create effects. The class will be discussion based, with some lectures. It will have a hybrid aspect, with films viewed outside class.

This course is linked to WSU's Seven Learning Goals of the Baccalaureate. It fulfills the learning goals of Critical and Creative Thinking and Communication:

Critical and Creative Thinking:

At the end of this course, students should be able to: Develop critical film viewing habits. Demonstrate knowledge of basic terms and concepts in filmmaking. Analytically assess the use of specific cinematic techniques to convey ideas.

This outcome will be evaluated primarily by: Essays, participation in class discussion.

Communication:

At the end of this course, students should be able to: Craft clear and persuasive arguments for specific interpretations of films and aspects of films.
